In early childhood education in France (Maternelle), children aged 3 to 6 learn through five fundamental domains established in the official curriculum published in the BOE 2024. These domains are essential for their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development.
In this domain, children develop essential language skills through activities that encourage verbal expression, active listening, and social interaction. Promoting effective communication is key to their learning and future literacy.
Fine and gross motor skills are critical at this stage. Through play and physical activities, children improve their coordination, balance, and body control, which supports their physical and motor development.
Learning in this domain involves exploring and manipulating objects and materials. This activity fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, helping children better understand their environment.
Children explore the natural and social world through observation and experimentation. This domain promotes interest in the environment, knowledge of physical phenomena, and the development of understanding about social and cultural relationships.
The development of personal identity, emotional management, and social skills is key in this domain. Children learn to interact respectfully and positively, understanding the importance of social norms and coexistence.
A fundamental aspect of early childhood education is the EVAR approach (Education of Life and Responsible Action). This approach teaches children to be responsible for their actions, promote environmental awareness, and respect others and the environment. It encourages collaboration and teamwork through collective activities, fostering a sense of community.
These principles are detailed in the National Education Program of France, published in the Official Journal of the Ministry of National Education (BOEN). The current regulations for the 2024 early childhood curriculum govern the five core domains and the EVAR approach.
