The 3rd grade class discovered the city of Reus — and what an adventure! With our map in hand, we explored the historic http://School outing through Reus with the 3rd grade students: Teatre Fortuny, Mercadal Square, modernism, Gaudí, and all the Christmas magic in the city’s historic centercenter of Reus, passing through some of the city’s most iconic and historically rich places.
The first stop was the Teatre Fortuny, located at Plaça Prim, one of the most recognized and visited spots in Reus. There, we learned about the history of this important theater, inaugurated in 1882 and considered a true gem of Reus’ cultural heritage. Right in front of the theater stood the former Hotel Londres-París, an establishment that, for decades, was a landmark for visitors and reminds us of the time when Reus was a vibrant, commercial, and lively city.
Next, we continued to the Reus Town Hall, located at Plaça Mercadal, the true nerve center of the city. There, we admired its magnificent Renaissance façade and enjoyed a spectacular Christmas atmosphere: the large Christmas tree, the colorful stalls, crafts, and typical sweets. The square, with its numbers on the ground evoking Reus’ commercial past and the tower of the Casa Navàs, one of the jewels of Catalan modernism, currently under renovation, is an essential space to understand the essence and identity of Reus.
Afterwards, we crossed the city to Plaça de la Llibertat, a large, lively space much loved by the people of Reus, which connects directly to Parc Sant Jordi, our chosen spot for lunch and rest. This park is a true green lung and is located right next to the La Fira Shopping Center, where this year the Gran Nadala de Canal Reus TV was held, further enhancing the festive atmosphere of the city.
During the walk, we also passed by a very special place: the birthplace of Antoni Gaudí. This year is particularly significant, as we are commemorating the Centennial of Gaudí’s death, and all of Reus is celebrating Gaudí Year with activities, exhibitions, and cultural proposals dedicated to this brilliant architect. The Gaudí Centre Reus is also the tribute that Gaudí’s hometown pays to its most universal son. Gaudí is a key figure in Catalan modernism and takes even more prominence this year with the completion of the main towers of the Sagrada Família, one of his most emblematic works and an international symbol of modernist architecture.
It was a day full of learning, history, culture, heritage, and Christmas magic in Reus.
An unforgettable day with all the charm of Christmas.
